Varamahalakshmi Vrata is a festival to honor the goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, one of the Hindu Trinity. Varalakshmi is one who grants boons (Vara). It is an important pooja performed by many women in southern India more specifically in the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.
Vara means boon and Varalakshmi is the giver of boons. Worship of the goddess, it is believed, will result in prosperity and wealth. she is the goddess who is invited into the home and honored. Varamahalakshmi Vrata is performed by married women for the well being of all the family members, especially for their husband's long life. It is believed that worshiping goddess Varalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshiping Ashtalaksmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength. The evening before the day of the puja, the area for its performance is cleaned and decorated. A bronze or silver kalasam (special metal pot) is filled with rice or water and coins, a whole lime, five types of leaves including betel leaves and betel nut. The kalasam is smeared with sandal paste and covered with a new cloth up to the neck. A coconut applied with turmeric paste is placed on top with mango leaves around. An image of the goddess made of different materials, including cloth, is affixed to this. The kalasam is deemed to be the goddess herself.
People make it a point to purchase a 22K gold coin of goddess Lakshmi for the occasion. They place it near the kalasa before the puja. Wealth is synonymous with gold and though it is costly, people buy at least a gram in 22K gold and offer it to the goddess during the vratam. Big crowds of women are seen at market places on the eve of Varalakshmi Vratam. They purchase gold and clothes, and other articles for the puja. Varalakshmi is created in all her beauty with a kalasam and decked in rich silks, adorned with 22K gold jewelry. Worshippers is said to obtain health, wealth and prosperity with the worship of goddess Lakshmi on this auspicious day.
