Mangalsutra is an ornament that symbolizes an Indian marriage and is an Indian wedding chain. Mangalsutra or 'mangalsutram' evolved from a Sanskrit term ‘mangal’ meaning prosperous, happy, successful and ‘sutram’ means cord. During the wedding ceremony, the priest typically recites mantras (chants) when the groom ties the mangalsutra around the bride’s neck. This act of tying a mangalsutra chain signifies the groom and the bride are united in a new relationship.
Mangalsutra is usually a black beaded chain in 22K gold. The gold chain and black beads protect the marriage from evil eye and is supposed to destroy all negative energy. According to Hindu tradition, the mangalasutra is worn for as long as the husband is alive. Dictated by religious customs and social expectations, married women have to wear mangalasutra throughout their life as it is believed that the practice enhances the well-being of her husband and family.

In the end, a mangalsutra has no meaning if it’s not worn. Also, the trend of short and simple mangalsutra's is inspired by Bollywood stars and fashion icons like Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra who customized and chose simple mangalsutra designs for their wedding day.
Sonam got her mangalsutra custom designed by Usheeta Rawtani. The idea here was to basically combine the zodiac signs of the bride and the groom as cute gold and diamond charms with a diamond solitaire in the center. Sonam’s zodiac sign is Gemini and Anand Ahuja’s zodiac sign is a Leo. The mangalsutra charms are a symbolic representation of their sun signs with the diamond solitaire at its heart.
Unlike a normal mangalsutra which has black and gold beads throughout the chain, Priyanka's was a simple gold chain, with a few beads next to the pear shaped diamond pendant.
Deepika chose a simple and elegant short black bead chain with a diamond solitaire.
The fact that celebrity brides such as Sonam, Deepika and Pryianka are giving mangalsutra designs a serious thought is encouraging to see. Taking pride in being married and celebrating the beginning of a new life is a beautiful journey indeed!
